The Netherlands continues to solidify its position as a premier investment destination. By the end of 2024, Dutch individuals, companies, and institutions held nearly €3.5 trillion in global securities, according to the latest report from De Nederlandsche Bank (DNB). This significant amount represents an investment equal to 308% of the country’s GDP, underscoring the strength and attractiveness of the Dutch economy.

Why is investment growing?

This is the first time that DNB has provided such an in-depth overview of the Netherlands’ total securities holdings, revealing the scale and diversity of its investment landscape. Compared to other Eurozone countries, the Netherlands boasts a particularly high percentage of investments, thanks in part to the robust contributions from Dutch pension funds.

Who are the Major Investors?

Institutional investors such as pension funds, insurance companies, and investment funds account for over 68% of these investments. Furthermore, banks and other financial institutions play a key role in this robust investment environment.

What are the Investment Trends?

Dutch investments have been growing steadily, making the country an ideal environment for both domestic and international investors. In 2024, a large portion of these investments was directed towards debt securities, including government and corporate bonds, amounting to more than €1.38 trillion. Additionally, €1.12 trillion was invested in investment funds, while nearly €980 billion was allocated to listed shares.

A significant portion of these investments are directed towards global markets, with 39% of the total invested in securities from outside the Eurozone

Dutch investors are particularly active in U.S. markets, with nearly three-quarters of their equity investments focused on major U.S. tech companies. This international outlook, combined with a strong domestic investment climate, makes the Netherlands an attractive and stable place for global investors seeking opportunities.
