As a result of rigorous assessment of pandemic indicators, the Portuguese Government has decided to take immediate measures. Following the declaration of “state of calamity” starting on 1 December 2021, which will continue until 11:59 PM on 20 March 2022, between 2 and 9 January 2022, working from home will be mandatory where possible and employees have the necessary capabilities to exercise them (under the terms of Decree-Law No. 79-A/2020, of 1 October, in its current wording). Further, working from home is recommended whenever the roles in question allow it during the “state of calamity”. This is the fourth time that a “state of calamity” has been declared since the start of the pandemic.
On top of this measure, Portugal is adopting further preventive measures; greater use of face masks, mandatory presentation of digital vaccination certificates to access certain events and services, and increased testing – a negative test result being mandatory for access to specific services and equipment.
Moreover, all travellers arriving in Portugal (by air, land or sea) will be required to present a negative PCR test, including those who are fully vaccinated. (Travellers should also be aware that only vaccines authorised by the European Medicines Agency are valid in Portugal.)
While in Portugal, a digital COVID certificate is mandatory to access restaurants, bars, casinos, tourist accommodation and gyms, and a negative antigenic test is required to enter nightclubs, bars and sporting events (namely stadiums). Bars and discos will be closed between 2 and 9 January 2022.
